As opposed to watching another pop star on stage, who may be in their 30's, fans at a KIDZ BOP concert "can relate and identify with that kid on stage.” It brings their star power back down to earth. “We are aspirational but attainable,” she says. The target demographic for fans is five to nine years old, Junk says, so it works best when the performers are a bit older but not too far off. “There’s no hard and fast rule we’re just looking for the most talented kids that we can find,” she explains. That way they age out by the time they are 13 or 14, occasionally 15. Typically they cast performers between the ages of 10 and 12 and they stay on for a few years. Among the current crop, the youngest member is 12 years old while the oldest is 14. There is a range of ages, though most of the artists are in their preteen years. "We’ve been established for so long that we have really great relationships with the publishers,” she explains. So how are they not being hit with lawsuits constantly?Īnyone can record anything, Junk says, as long as you are paying mechanicals and publishing, a form of royalty checks, on it.

KIDZ BOP Enterprises LLC is part of Concord Music Group, which also includes labels like Fearless and STAX Records. “They came up with the concept of taking pop music and having kids record it … and it worked,” Junk says. To bridge that gap, Balsam and Chenfeld used their label Razor & Tie to launch KIDZ BOP. There was stuff for preschoolers, like the Wheels on the Bus, but the five to eight-year-olds didn't have much. Each had three kids, Junk says, and while on the birthday party circuit, they started to notice a lack of music for school-aged kids. KIDZ BOP was founded by Craig Balsam and Cliff Chenfeld in 2001.
